WHO YOU BE?!
Payback (of the group Black Drop), based in L.A., CA

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Started in 1988 and have been in and out of the game since that time.

WHAT THREE THINGS ARE ESSENTIAL TO YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
Creative freedom, Experimentation, Spontaneity

WHAT'S A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT ARTISTS?
That you have to be "young" to be dope. Dopeness never fades from great artists.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORRIED ABOUT?

The entire state of the world, with a focus on the USA. This includes the rise of "whiteness" on the far right and extreme views on the far left.

WHAT "OLD PERSON" THINGS DO YOU DO?

Read books, walking as exercise, wear loose fitting jeans, and watch documentaries.

WHAT TREND ARE YOU TIRED OF?

I'm tired of people posting mindless videos on social media that have no substance, reinforce unhealthy patterns of behavior, and negative stereotypes of Black people.

WHAT'S SOMETHING PEOPLE DON'T WORRY ABOUT BUT PROBABLY SHOULD?

The overall decay of principles and values in America.

WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT 2020 SO FAR?

The fact that I still have life and I'm on track to fulfilling my real estate investment plans. Beyond that, 2020 has been a pretty effed up year (Kobe's death, the Rona, etc.)

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?

I'm president/board chair of a nonprofit that pools funds and gives microloans to Black-owned businesses.
