When to repair or replace windshields are two of the most common questions asked of technicians. This however do not have a black and white answer to it because most of the time, the answer lies on a case to case basis. Autoglass Week
This was the gist of the response of the California Windshield Technicians Association (CWTA) during a Question and Answer Forum with the Experts hosted by a San Diego Vehicle Enthusiasts Group. CWTA President Luke Davidson says, it takes a trained eye to assess whether a crack is repairable or if it is beyond that and replacement due. “You will want that “trained eye” check on your cracked windshield as soon as possible so that the problem will not escalate into something that would require a replacement,” Davidson enthuses. The CWTA says it just takes a pot hole, or a rough road to aggravate an otherwise reparable crack. He added that car owners should consider themselves lucky if they have went through a rough road without that crack suddenly causing their whole windshield to shatter. “That can happen, and we have seen it take place. It can get ugly,” Davidson shares. Windshield Wiki
Another factor that could worsen a crack is exposure to extreme heat. “Try parking your car under the heat of the sun for hours, and when you come back, that spider crack may have already been too big to be repaired,” Davidson added. So how do you know if it still can be repaired? AutoTrader.com shared some relevant information on this in their official website. “Windshield repair or replacement depends on the size, location and severity of the damage. The majority of windshield repair shops can repair quarter-sized rock chips and cracks up to three inches long. Anything bigger and most places will recommend replacement. However, some facilities use a special technique that allows them to repair cracks up to 12 inches long.” Read the rest of the web feature here.
Other pointers as mentioned by the CWTA include: 1. Windshield cracks found at any of the corner portions of a windshield. Since the corners are the weak points of a windshield, cracks in this area can be very dangerous and usually merits a replacement. 2. If the chip is in the line of sight of the driver, it is possible that the technician would recommend that the windshield be replaced right away. A repair can possibly cause a slight distortion, which can be dangerous, driving-wise. 3. if the windshield has been hit by a huge object, and has sustained that huge an impact, windshield repair centers will most likely recommend a replacement.
