f you are planning to build a wooden deck yourself, one of the important considerations is the degree of difficulty in working with the chosen wood. Not only do you want the wood to be relatively easy to cut with normal hand or power tools, but you should also consider if it can be easily broken when nailing, how easy it is to drive nails into the wood and how easy it is. Obtain a smooth finish on the surface of the terrace. The finishing of the surface, of course, is taken care of by the sawmill. But even with the best mills, for some exceptionally hard species you can see machining marks on the surface or roughness of the surface due to grain lift during machining.
cut The most durable hardwood species are dense and hard, and ideally cut with a carbide-tipped saw. For softwood species, a hand saw can be quite good, but even in this case, a carbide-tipped saw makes the work much easier and faster. With some species of hardwood, such as Teak and Turpentine, rapid blunting of the cutting edges can occur due to the presence of a higher than normal silica level. Ipe is another species that can damage sharp edges and care should also be taken when working with Ipe due to the fine yellow dust that occurs when sawing or drilling, as it is known to cause dermatitis in some workers exposed to dust. Magnificent Division when diving is a common problem and some species are more likely to divide than others. For many species of hardwood, pre-drilling will be practically essential, although the use of a nail gun may exceed this requirement to a certain extent. Even with some of the most fragile softwoods and particularly the cypress species, care should be taken when nailing. If it is nailed near the end of the planks of the platform, pre-drilling is always recommended to avoid stress on the wood, which can cause cracks to form at a later stage. If nails are used to fix the planks to the supports and the platform is completely exposed to the weather, standard iron nails should not be used as they will rust. Instead, you should use galvanized nails or nails designed specifically for outdoor use. Another point to consider is that some wood species can corrode iron fixings or fixings due to extractive wood. Although this will only happen when the platform is in exposed weather conditions, it can accelerate the corrosion of standard iron nails and cause them to fail rapidly. Western Red Cedar is one of those species with extracts that can cause corrosion and some other species that are slightly acidic, like Kempas, can also cause corrosion with standard iron nails. Drilling Similar precautions against corrosion should be taken if screws are used instead of nails to fix the boards to the supports. Stainless steel screws are undoubtedly the best option, but plated screws could be considered whenever they are recommended for exterior exposure. Remember that since the screw head is much larger than a nail, rust spots will be more problematic and can leave unpleasant black marks around the screw holes if improper screws are used. Alternative fixation devices Various alternative fastening materials are also available which have the advantage of leaving the surface free of nail holes or screw holes. These systems are usually based on a clamping device that is inserted into the side of the boards and joins the supports underneath. The only obvious drawback of this system is that the replacement of a single board if it is damaged or damaged in some way can only be achieved by nailing or screwing the replacement board into place in the conventional manner. Alternative wooden roofing materials If you do not want to build a roof yourself, but just want to cover an old patio with solid wood decks, another quick and convenient option is to use wood tiles. These tiles simply snap into place on top of an existing deck or patio and eliminate the need to cut, drill and nail. You may need to cut some tiles to fit around pipes, posts, etc., but that's it. They can also be used to repair an existing wood deck by simply placing the tiles over the top of the existing deck.
