Mold damage can be very invasive and it causes serious damage to both home structure and the health of its occupants. The National Association of Mold and Asbestos Inspectors (NAMAI) has recently been invited in a community forum following a local flooding incident.
During the said open forum with residents, the NAMAI through its representatives answered inquiries about molds, mold inspections, how to deal with suspected mold issues, and how to prevent molds from growing following a home flooding incident. “It is important that concerns like this be answered by the experts, and we thought of inviting the NAMAI to shed light on the matter. Molds are a serious health risk and we want our neighborhood, our community to remain safe from such a health risk,” says Amy Williams, a community leader in Johnson Villas.
Williams says they want their community to be fully prepared during the whole clean up phase and that as much as possible be armed with the right information on how to deal with the drying and clean-up phase. Since molds can affect over-all health and home structure it will always be in their best interst to do the right thing.
“We would also like our neighbors to know how to approach hiring professionals for mold inspection and remediation. We do not want them to fall prey to unscrupulous individuals posing as mold inspectors or restorers. One of the best ways to find out how is to invite a mold inspection association who can inform us about how to find out about the legitimacy of a certain mold inspection company, what to inspect during the transaction and improvement process and more or less how much will be needed,” Williams says.
One of the frequently asked questions during the forum is how much does it usually cost to hire a mold inspector and if it really is needed when one suspects of a mold issue in a home.
“If one is unsure whether there is mold presence in a home but have been seeing signs of mold existence like musty odor or persistent allergy attacks that would not go away despite deep cleaning and constant bedding changes then there must be something wrong and only a professional mold inspection company can detect mold presence and identify the type of mold infesting your home or commercial property,” says Mike Adams, Executive Director of the NAMAI who came to the forum alongside NAMAI National Secretary Jason Kim.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shared in its official website how homeowners can deal with mold growth in their homes.
“If mold is growing in your home, you need to clean up the mold and fix the moisture problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water. Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present.”
The CDC however emphasized that there are rules on how big an area can be cleaned by a homeowner, for the sizing guidelines, click on the CDC’s original post here.
The NAMAI says knowing how to prevent mold growth is one of the best ways to avoid the negative health impact of molds into one’s health.
