PAL holds a career fest The Plumbing Association of Lakeside (PAL) has held a career fest to encourage students and other individuals to join the plumbing profession.
The PAL says a career in plumbing can be rewarding, and can open up more career options for those who get into the profession. Luke Petersen, President of the PAL says that the demand for plumber continues and will not wane compared to other professions.
During their career fest, they highlighted the different types of plumbing professionals. “The usual plumber that we know of are residential plumbers, but there are commercial plumbers too that service buildings and other business establishments frequented by the public. While being a commercial plumber may require more training, it is financially rewarding in a sense because it is seen as a specialization,” Petersen explains.
The Pre-Apprenticeship Institute also differentiated a residential from a commercial plumber using four points. Apart from responsibilities, one of the things they pointed out is the equipment usage. “Because commercial/industrial buildings have different plumbing demands than homes, the types of machines and equipment plumbers work on varies between these two settings. For example, plumbers in large-scale buildings or factories will likely work with large boilers, site sewer lines, lift stations and industrial grade pipes and fixtures. They may also need to install more demanding and complex appliances in commercial settings.” The rest of the points can be found in the original article here.
As for work conditions, whether one works for residences or for commercial establishments, plumbers generally work an 8 to 5 shifts, and usually around 40 hours each week. Business owners though can be more flexible with their time, and could even offer emergency plumbing services for which they could charge a higher rate. The website Careers In Construction tackled this in their blog entry on the plumbing profession. International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials
“The standard work week for plumbers is 40 hours (8 hours a day, 5 days a week). As with many careers in construction, there are peak periods that will require you to work overtime. The number of additional hours you work each week depends on the construction sector and region you work in, and will vary from one job to the next.”

And while there are safety and occupational hazards being faced by plumbers on a day to day basis, the PAL says plumbers are armed with the knowledge and personal protective equipment, plus other tools that ensure their safety. “Like any other profession, there are risks, but as long as each plumber is conscious about his safety and that of everyone around him, and he continuous to work within safety guidelines and have continuous education and safety training, accidents can be prevented,” Petersen says.
