As they say, the kitchen is the heart of the home, but what can a homeowner do when it incurs water damage?
The San Diego Water Damage Restoration Contractors’ Association says there are several types of water damage that can occur in the kitchen. These include:
1. Plumbing issues – it could be a drainage problem, a pipe burst or plumbing leaks that can cause minimal to severe water damage in the kitchen. The most common though are drainage problems due to kitchen grease and other food debris that make into the sink pipes.
2. Kitchen Appliance Water Source Problem – The kitchen has several appliances that need a water source, primarily the dishwasher and the refrigerator. Add to that a washer and a dryer for compact or tiny homes then there are more chances of water damage instances emanating from any of these appliances. Sometimes when there are water connection problems or blockages or backflows, water can be released and in part damage the kitchen interiors.
3. Roof or ceiling leaks – roof leaks can cause water damage in the kitchen. These trouble emanating from the ceiling can cause warping on walls, damage on the flooring, or the like.
What to do upon detecting kitchen water damage?
The San Diego Water Damage Restoration Contractors’ Association says homeowners should immediately stop water from flowing by turning off the main valve. After getting rid of possible sources of accidents, homeowners can already call their damage restoration contractor of choice to assess the damage that the kitchen incurred from any of the possible issues.
It is important that the damage be addressed right away to avoid even more potential issues in the kitchen structure. Molds and mildew can also grow when water damage is left untreated hence it is best that the issue be dealt with professionally. This is because only professional damage restoration contractors have the appropriate equipment and training to ensure that molds will be completely eradicated from the water-damaged home. The San Diego Water Damage Restoration Contractors’ Association also reminded homeowners that kitchen water damage usually takes place around the holidays because of the “heavier traffic” in the kitchen – get togethers, more cooking required, and children and office workers are home and eat more at home. According to the experts it is important to be mindful of disposing used oil, washing greasy pots, pans and vessels, and disposing off food debris. When these accumulate, it will surely cause clogging that could be a start of water damage in the kitchen.
