1. Choose Wisely. Not all materials will survive tear out and be sound enough to reinstall elsewhere. Items such as wood/lumber, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, doors, brick and furniture are easily repurposed and reinstalled. Reclaiming things like tile are difficult, time consuming and are usually not worth the effort. Commercial items are difficult to reclaim because of the increased wear and tear however it can be done with high quality materials that have stood the test of time. Always inspect and item well before committing.
2. Talk to your contractor early. Communicate your idea and expectations to your contractor as soon as possible. Be open to your contractor’s installation suggestions as they determine how to provide the necessary support, structure, and space needed for your item to function properly. Collaboration will result in a truly unique piece.
3. Sweat equity. Any restoration, repair, refinishing or modification of your item should be completed before install. This will also give you an opportunity to once again inspect your item closely.Make sure the piece has not been damaged during transport and remains in good working condition. Take the time to research and learn the correct restoration procedures when tackling the task yourself. You can save money DYI, however if you it is beyond your skill level, always enlist the help of a professional. You do not want to ruin your find or tear it out shortly after installation. We suggest any old reclaimed lighting be inspected well and ideally rewired.
4. Story Time. Once installed, your reclaimed and repurposed piece has a story to tell, just like each piece pictured in this article. Show it off to all who visit and enjoy what your imagination can accomplish!
