FINDING GOD IN A FRESH WAY





So... what is this book? Is it a Bible translation with pictures? A paraphrase version? A book of Bible pictures for adults?



Well, no... it's actually none of those things- not really.


If I could just take a moment or two, I'll try to explain.


I grew up listening to Bible stories filled with adventure, drama, excitement and surprise; a fearsome giant who taunted an army, a diminutive boy armed with an impossible weapon and an unbeatable faith, a huge fish with an unlikely appetite, a massive army defeated by a handful of ill-equipped men, dangerous voyages and perilous escapes.






Perhaps you did, too.


Amazing and exciting stories. Through the years we also learned that the Bible is more than an adventure story; it's our guide, our roadmap, our textbook for life. And so it is... but it should be so much more.



It should also be our delight, our wonder and our amazement.

Somehow, with the busyness of life perhaps, we’ve lost sight of that.





MAYBE WE SPEND SO LONG LOOKING DOWN; DOWN AT OUR TASKS, DOWN AT OUR PROBLEMS, DOWN AT OUR OWN ABILITIES - THAT WE FORGET TO LOOK UP... LOOK UP AND WONDER.


YOU REMEMBER WONDER, DON’T YOU?



Wonder: (noun) a feeling of amazement and admiration; caused by something beautiful, unknown, remarkable, and seemingly inexplicable; inspired by surprise, astonishment, often with awe or reverence; a desire to know something thoroughly.




It’s the emotion you feel when you set aside time for your Bible reading or pick up your Bible .... isn’t it?


Oh.. maybe you've forgotten the wonder of discovering more of His Word where each turned page echoes with the voice of God? Or perhaps, in the busyness of life, you've overlooked reading one of the nail-biting sagas of an unassuming hero in the hands of an almighty God. ?? If so, then maybe.. this book is for you, and me.


Let me give you a couple of examples of just what you'll find in this unique book.




Let's look at one of the true-to-scripture accounts: Eve.

Previously, I've thought a little unkindly of eve. In fact, I'd probably have listed the key point in her resume as 'sagaciously challenged.' So, I think I must revise my thoughts. And let's not overlook the torment of regret she must have endured.

Here's a little of her story.





'I've quit making excuses. God gave me a choice, and I chose death. I'm broken now. I cry a lot. It hurts so much, all of it. These shattered pieces of my heart can't be put back together, and every shard cuts deep. The teeth of regret never stop biting. I ache for a new fruit. A vine that I can cling to and never let go. I want to be close to God again like we were before. So close that I can hear only God's voice whispering in my ear, so close that I could never be tempted by something else slithering through my life.


If only there was someone who could take that pain away. A way to restore the friendship with God I've lost. Maybe.. someday.. a second chance.'



And then there's daniel. Check out a little of Daniel's story.





'This story isn't about me. It's not about hungry, wild beasts. And, although it contains some interesting parts- a misguided king, conniving villains, and a grisly ending- this story is about none of those.


It's a story about God.


I've told this story many, many times. People want to hear me talk about what it was like to be tossed into a pit of starving lions, and whether I was scared. The older ones want to know what I prayed about, while the younger ones ask it I got to pet the big cats. But let's not worry about that. I'll tell you the story that really matters. God's story.'



But yes, there's more.



I have, in fact, omitted mentioning, until now, the beautiful artwork included in this book. And yes, it's amazing.



It's only natural. If the title of the book is The Visual Bible Experience, you'd expect illustrations. And you'll find over 120 illustrations by 16 international artists. These artworks do more than just add some colour and interest to the pages. They add a new understanding and perspective of the Bible narratives.


Maurice Sendak once said: 'You must never illustrate exactly what is written. You must find a space in the text so that the pictures can do the work.'





Is this publication worth buying?



Well, I certainly rushed to order my copy.



Sure, it would be a beautiful book to keep on your coffee table. It would be an amazing gift. But it also is a wonderful resource for those times when you need to be reminded of the epic adventures of people who encountered God 'up close and personal'.


It's through these intimate recounts and the amazing artwork, that you’ll discern God’s great love for you, His plan for the narrative of your life; you'll discover how you, too, are a part of His unfolding story.
