Come join us for a week-long internship program on Eco Responsible Vocational Training. During this time, participants will learn how conscious living, vocational training and mental health are concepts that are inter-related. Skills learnt by participants will not only be self-empowering but will also be taught to others who can be gainfully employed using them. On the last two days participants will be a part of facilitating a community outreach program, to empower those who do not have the privilege or access to acquire these skills on their own.
Activities include:
Eco-bricks: An eco-brick is essentially a reusable building block created by solid non-biodegradable waste placed into a plastic bottle to a set density. By packing the bottles tightly, it makes them suitable building blocks for virtually any construction purposes. In Sri Lanka and Indonesia eco-bricks are already being used to make roads and houses. Participants will be training those who don’t have access to information about the value of refuse, reduce and recycle and how these contribute to eco-responsible living.
Urban Mehndi Art: Traditionally, mehndi has only been used by women for beautification purposes or during their nuptial ceremonies. In this workshop we will be showing how mehndi is a gender neutral art and can be used to highlight more than just outer beauty. We will be using mehndi art to promote body positivity and to remind ourselves to embrace our bodies as they are in spite of what they have been through. Our facilitator will teach participants how mehndi can be used in different contexts; for example, as a way to decorate one’s scalp or breasts in the case of cancer. In this workshop we will be propagating the gender-neutral aspect of Mehendi and encouraging people of all genders to participate as it is a way to break gender stereotypes.
Crochet/Knitting: The act of crochet/knitting has been keeping people employed for centuries. It is a life skill that also has mental health benefits and is popularly used by individuals to channel their anxiety in a healthy and effective manner. This skill can be used to engage patients in a rehabilitation or hospital setting as it is also very beneficial for individuals who are immobile (short-term or long-term).
Beeswax Food Wrap: 0.24 million tonnes of plastic is wasted every year. In this workshop we will be promoting a healthy and sustainable way to store food by teaching participants how to make environment-friendly beeswax food wraps. Beeswax food wraps are reusable, help in reducing waste and decrease the chemical exposure to the food. This activity can help people build a livelihood by selling ecologically viable products which are useful in everyday practice.
Re-useable Plastic Planters: This activity focuses on reusing and recycling old plastic bottles and converting them into eco-friendly projects. Students will focus on collecting and decorating plastic waste containers and planting seeds inside them. Engaging in environmentally beneficial activities (planting plants) will help reduce distress and improve the mental well-being of the individuals.
As part of the internship, participants will be taken for an eco-tour where they will get to see practices like rain water harvesting, vermiculture (the cultivation of earthworms, especially in order to use them to convert organic waste into fertilizer), waste segregation and bee farming in action and application!
About the facilitator:
This internship will be led by Sonika Patel. She is a seasoned traveller with a passion for the arts, community building, life hacks and doing small meaningful things. She comes from an inclusive school of thought and encourages individuals to foster creativity and go back in time to when our ancestors creatively satisfied their basic needs by the limited resources available to them. Sonika feels that doing this can help revive techniques such as knitting and crochet that seem lost to the modern world of technological dependence. Her long-term goal is to help create a safe space for individuals to create products from easily accessible materials and to provide a platform for them to sell their goods.
