Zhong Chen:
'From Black Lines to White Lines'
As a Chinese Australian artist, Zhong has never stopped exploring the subject in the context of cultural and transcultural identity, belonging and place through his art works.
In the latest Chinaman Series, Zhong paints his subject in an expressive way in an effort to overcome traditional practices of painting. He consciously reacts to the American's and German's distinctive treatment of surface, brushwork, and colour choices.
Birds, monkeys, horses and tigers are seen in Zhong's Chinaman Series. The forms become indistinguishable from their surroundings as Zhong allows the subjects to convey a sense of traditional Chinese culture as mixed with western life. Lotus and peaches are seen in Zhong's work which is another major theme of Chinese painting. From those motifs, Zhong is reviving and integrating the cultures between east and west.
