The city of Colorado Springs is located at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains. It lies near the 14,114-ft summit of Pikes Peak, a glacier-carved landmark that is home to hiking trails and a cog railway. Visitors to the area can also enjoy views of the Garden of the Gods Park, with its famous red sandstone formations and mountain views. This beautiful park is a must-visit during a trip to the region. Historically, Colorado Springs has been home to writers, artists, and mine owners, as well as famous doctors.
The dry climate benefited the development of health resorts, which were popular amongst people with weak lungs. The town was also home to the largest aircraft manufacturing company, Alexander Aircraft Company, which produced the Wright Brothers' airplanes. The military presence in the area was increased during World War II, with three installations in the region. After the Civil War, the city grew rapidly. During the early twentieth century, a small group of men came to the region as surveyors for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. They considered the valley beneath Pikes Peak to be the ideal location for a town.
But the Kansas Pacific could not persuade the railroad to follow the Arkansas River, and they chose instead to follow the southwestern course through the desert. In the 19th century, the city grew to become a major aerospace hub. The city was founded on July 31 in 1871. General William Palmer's aim was to establish a high-quality resort community. In addition to being located near the peaks of Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods, the town quickly became nicknamed "Little London" and a favorite destination for tourists from England. The historic attractions of the city include The Old Colorado City and the New Pueblo. It is the perfect getaway from the busy life of the big city.
The city offers a unique outdoor experience. Fountain Creek Nature Center is located near downtown and offers a variety of activities. Located near Cattail Marsh Wildlife Area, this center offers visitors a unique look at the habitat. It is the entrance to discovery experiences, and the exhibits cover the wetlands, climate, plants, and wildlife. In addition, the nature center hosts special events and interpretive programs.
These are the perfect activities for families visiting the Colorado Springs area. The city's high elevation creates a weather pattern that makes it a popular destination. Unlike Denver, Colorado Springs' summers are cool and comfortable. As a result, the city's weather is often unpredictable. It is possible to expect a mild winter or hot, dry summer. The temperature in the city of Colorado Springs has only reached 100 degrees in the past hundred years three times. This is partly due to the fact that the town is so close to the mountain that it is protected from the sun's UV rays.
