How to maintain your carpet?

Both practical and decorative, the rug helps to dampen noise in a room, but above all to give it a warmer character. For your carpet to retain its shine like the first day, regular maintenance is essential. Follow the step by step guide.

The different steps to maintain a carpet

Whether it's wool, jute or cotton rug, the first step is to vacuum. This should ideally be done twice a week. For a more in-depth cleansing, use a sponge soaked in soapy water. You can just use dish soap. Leave it on for an hour and then rinse it off, ideally with clear water to which you have added white vinegar.

To disinfect or sanitize a carpet, sprinkle it with baking soda. Leave it on for about 15 minutes before vacuuming. Do you want to revive the colors of your carpet? Sparkling water is your best ally. Dampen the carpet, let it dry, then scrub with a brush.

How to clean a stained carpet?

Cleaning with soapy water is ideal when the handmade area rug is not too dirty. If it is stained, add a few drops of ammonia to your soapy water. Rub in all directions, emphasizing the spots. Allow to penetrate before rinsing with a sponge washcloth. If you choose a commercial stain remover, always remember to test it on a small area before applying it to the entire carpet. If this is a good model, avoid aggressive solutions and look to natural methods first.

For example, you can use a cleaning solution made from a mixture of hot water and soda crystals. Then rinse with a clean cloth.

One of grandma's tried and true tricks is tea leaves. Sprinkle damp tea leaves on your handmade Bokhara rugs, let it dry, then vacuum. Equally unusual, the infusion made from potato peels is extremely effective in loosening a carpet.

As surprising as it may sound, shaving foam can help you get rid of stains on your textiles. Apply it in a thick layer then leave to act for an hour before rubbing.
